Nandian Xuanfu Chieftain Office is a key national cultural relic protection unit and a national Grade AAAA scenic spot. Located at No. 34 Nandian Road, Zhedao Town, Lianghe County of Dehong, it was originally built in the first year of Xianfeng Emperor’s reign (1851) in Qing Dynasty, and is the best preserved chieftain office, having been listed as a key national cultural relic protection unit and a national Grade AAAA scenic spot.

Nandian Xuanfu Chieftain Office is called “the museum of China’s chieftain system. Covering an area of 10,624 square meters (over 10 mu), this well-preserved “Dai royal palace” is the place where Nandian Xuanfu Chieftain Office was set up from the years of Xianfeng Emperor’s reign in Qing Dynasty till the end of Republic of China. The whole layout of the chieftain office cluster is based on the Han style, and there are a grand hall, second and third halls, as well as a main hall. There are seven turns and 24 side rooms, as well as garden, Buddhism worship house, opera house, rooms for females, rooms for servants, kitchen, grain depot, stable, armories and prison etc. Each hall has a five-room wooden structure, strong and big beams. It has round tiles and glazed tiles on the roof, as well as carved beams and painted pillars. Bricks are laid on the ground, and there are moon-shaped arch door on its two sides. The layout of the whole cluster is neat and distinguishes major and minor elements. It is a palace-like cluster that has 4 main yards, 10 side yards, 149 rooms in 47 buildings. At present, the national cultural relic authorities plan to build a special museum to display China’s chieftain system, in order to preserve the “living fossils” of the chieftain system.
